Quality assurance in foundries using automated visual inspection techniques

چکیده

An important aim of automation is to increase productivity and to decrease costs. In the past automation was mainly focused on steering and controlling motions and operation sequences. In many cases the sensory capabilities of automated production systems are underdeveloped and quality inspection is still carried out manually and visually. By using automated visual inspection systems and digital image processing techniques it is possible to detect defects and deviations at an early stage of the value creation chain. Thus, the high productivity of an automated production system can be enhanced reasonably by a 100 % monitoring whether the goods produced achieve the required quality level. This paper is concerned with automated visual inspection systems for core shops and foundries. A number of different application examples are discussed and the key ideas are explained. They all are based on sophisticated illumination techniques and elaborated optical front ends – the most important prerequisites for powerful inspection systems.

Towards Automated Visual Inspection and Classification of Micro-Parts

The mechanical manufacturing of micro-parts is a challenging field of research. Because of high quality requirements and small tolerances, manufacturing processes have to be very stable and precise. In order to achieve high precision a suitable quality assurance concept is required. Only measured features can be used for statistical process control (SPC). Therefore, this paper presents a concep...

Automatic Detection and Localization of Surface Cracks in Continuously Cast Hot Steel Slabs Using Digital Image Analysis Techniques

Quality inspection is an indispensable part of modern industrial manufacturing. Steel as a major industry requires constant surveillance and supervision through its various stages of production. Continuous casting is a critical step in the steel manufacturing process in which molten steel is solidified into a semi-finished product called slab. Once the slab is released from the casting unit, th...

Hybrid Defect Detection Method Based on Shape Measurement and Feature Extraction for Complex Patterns

Visual inspection of printed circuit boards (PCBs) at the final production stage is necessary for quality assurance and the requirements for an automated inspection are very high. However, consistent inspection of patterns on these PCBs is very difficult due to pattern complexity. Most of the previously developed techniques are not sensitive enough to detect defects in complex patterns. To solv...

PCB Inspection for Missing or Misaligned Components using Background Subtraction

Automated visual inspection (AVI) is becoming an integral part of modern surface mount technology (SMT) assembly process. This high technology assembly, produces printed circuit boards (PCB) with tiny and delicate electronic components. With the increase in demand for such PCBs, high-volume production has to cater for both the quantity and zero defect quality assurance. The ever changing techno...
